Thermal spray (also known as metalizing) stands for the coating process in which melted or heated materials like zinc, aluminium or a combination of the two, are sprayed onto a blast cleaned metal surface. To achieve this, a zinc wire is fed through a thermal spray gun and heated by a flame. The glowing liquid material is then applied and will immediately solidify into a well adhering layer on the surface of the object.
The advantages are:
- Can be followed by a (powder)coating system, like a duplex system
- Can serve as an alternative to hot dip galvanizing when the object to be treated doesn’t fit in a molten zinc bath
- Very long service life
